From racking servers and configuring networks to spinning up VMs and building websites. I get things running, keep them running, and make them run better.

My name is Andrew Nieland, a Systems & IT professional based in Johnson City, Tennessee. By day I work as an IT Integration Analyst, by night and on the weekends I am usually working on some sort of web application, server build, or just cleaning the house. I wear a lot of hats: network administration, server deployment, virtualization, web development, and hands on hardware work. I thrive in environments where no two days look the same.

Outside of that, I've built and maintained everything from VMware ESXi hypervisor environments to Raspberry Pi based automation rigs. If something's broken, I'll find out why. If something doesn't exist yet, I'll build it.

Server Infrastructure
ESXi Homelab & VM Environment
Built and maintain a personal VMware ESXi hypervisor hosting multiple virtual machines. Deployments include a fully isolated simulated enterprise network used for hands on penetration testing and security research, a dedicated Linux web development server, a Nextcloud instance for private self hosted cloud storage, and an n8n automation server handling custom workflow integrations. Each VM is independently managed with snapshot policies and resource allocation tuned per workload.

Networking
Ubiquiti UniFi Home Network
Designed and deployed a fully managed home network built on the Ubiquiti UniFi ecosystem. Infrastructure includes multiple access points for full property network coverage, VLAN segmentation to isolate IoT devices, trusted clients, and guest traffic, and a dedicated guest network with a branded captive portal for controlled internet access. All traffic policies and firewall rules are managed centrally through the UniFi controller.

Web Development
Custom Web Applications
Developed multiple full stack web applications from the ground up. Built an RV campground utility billing platform that tracks per site electric meter readings and automatically generates itemized invoices, eliminating manual calculations entirely. Also architected a comprehensive campground management system handling reservations, site inventory, guest check in/check out workflows, and occupancy reporting, purpose built to replace manual spreadsheet based operations with a clean, role based web interface.

Raspberry Pi / IoT
Pihole & Alexa Smart Calendar
Deployed two dedicated Raspberry Pi projects on the home network. The first runs Pihole as a network wide DNS sinkhole, blocking advertisements, trackers, and known malicious domains across every connected device without touching individual client settings. The second powers a wall mounted smart calendar display with deep Alexa integration. Events can be added by voice and instantly appear on the display, keeping the household schedule visible and effortlessly up to date.
